World Cinema: Katalin Varga (Romania)

“Katalin Varga” is a fascinating story of a desperate woman on a mission to extract revenge. Katalin is thrown out of her home and village after her terrible secret is revealed. As a result, she decides now is the time for her to resolve these issues from her past. However, once the opportunity for vengeance arises, things don’t play out the way she envisioned they would. Beyond the compelling plot, this film contains wonderful performances by a group of local actors, who bring a really authentic feel to their roles. Most notable is the titular lead character, played by Hilda Peter. This film also has stunning visuals of the rural areas of Romanian Transylvania. I was fortunate enough to visit this area of the world earlier this year, and watching this film made me feel like I was there again.

This picture has been screened at several festivals already, and has won awards at the Copenhagen and Berlin International Film Festivals. It will play in Calgary twice: Friday, September 25 at 7:15pm and the next day on Satruday at 2:45pm. Both screenings will be at the Eau Claire Market Cineplex Odeon theatres.
