Cole

Cole debuts tomorrow night at 9:00pm at The Globe after enjoying its world debut earlier this month at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film centres around 22 year-old Cole Chambers (played by Richard de Kirk, who recently won a Best Actor Award in London for his starring role in the film, Part of the Game) who is pursuing his passion for creative writing in Vancouver while grappling with complex family issues back in his hometown of Lytton, BC. You can view the trailer here.

Cole's director, Carl Bessai, explores issues of class, race, and domestic abuse while creating a film that is both tragic and optimistic. The film's difficult themes are juxtaposed with stunning shots of the rural BC landscape, images which the audience will most certainly recognize from their own roadtrips across the province. Complementing the beautiful cinematography is a well-compiled soundtrack featuring the likes of Chad VanGaalen, Broken Social Scene, Jason Collett, and a slew of other Canadian artists. The entire soundtrack is available for viewing on the film's website at ColeTheMovie.com/music. The site conveniently offers the ability to preview the film's songs (or, in some instances, listen to them in their entirety) and provides links to purchase the music online. I highly suggest you check it out.

On an interesting side note, Cole was filmed over 18 days in both Lytton and Vancouver, where producer's worked hard to minimize the production's carbon footprint; the crew was encouraged to carpool or bike to work, crew shuttles were shared, reusable plates and cutlery were used on the catering truck, production material was sent via e-mail, and everyone was issued a "Cole" water bottle to reduce the amount of plastic used on set.

If you can't make it to tomorrow nights screening, the film is also showing on Sunday, Oct. 4th at 5:00pm at Eau Claire Market.
