Opening Gala Proves To Be A Solid Start To Festival

This year the festival again opened with strong Canadian selection. The event began with introductory remarks from Jacqueline Dupuis (Executive Director), Domenic Venturo (President), and American Express' VP of Client Services and appearances by the film's director and star (Sherry White and Meghan Greeley respectively). The film was well-received by the audiences in the two nearly full theatres. See Alison's blog entry for a synopsis of the film (http://calgaryfilmfestival.blogspot.com/2009/09/opening-gala-crackie.html). This is a strong year for Canadian films at CIFF; Crackie is among the best. If you missed out, I suggest you consider going to the encore Sunday at 2:45.
After the screenings, the audience combined to head into a party taking place in the main stretch of Eau Claire Market. A section on the upper floor was reserved for guests of American Express, presenting sponsor of the festival and the night's festivities. The lower level was encircled with curtains to create an intimate party atmosphere. Both the chicken with peanut sauce and mini quiche were quite tasty. As always the drink tickets were especially popular. A nice addition this year was Amarula Cream Liquer. This is among my favourite liquers and one that the award winning bartenders at the Marquee Room have used as an ingredient in several interesting concoctions. The bartender here suggested mixing with Skyy over rocks. A solid combination of two sponsor beverages.
After a great night like this, I look forward to Saturday's VW Rock N Roll Red Carpet Party. I, along with Alison and Diane, will keep you abreast of all the events and parties occurring at this year's festival. I hope you will join us at them. See you there.
