World Cinema: White Night Wedding (Iceland)

Last year, the Calgary International Film Festival featured a spotlight on the films of Iceland. “White Night Wedding” provides Calgary filmgoers another opportunity to sample the unique style of the Icelandic film industry. This film is Baltasar Kormakur’s next project after “Jar City,” which played in Calgary last year to enthusiastic crowds. Set on a small and remote island, “White Night Wedding” chronicles the upcoming wedding of middle aged professor Jon to his much younger former student Thora. We see flashbacks of Jon’s previous relationship and how this relates to the upcoming wedding day. “White Night Wedding” shows us a view of small town life in Iceland with no shortage of quirky characters. This film was Iceland’s selection for the Best Foreign Language Oscar category in 2009.

Screenings will be at the Globe Theatre on Friday, September 25 at 9:30pm and at Eau Claire Market Cineplex Odeon on Sunday, October 4 at 3pm.
